Christmas Decor Reimagined – Year Round Joy

By Renee Smith

Let’s face it: traditional Christmas decor can be a bit… demanding. Pull it out, spread it around, take it down, pack it up, store it away. As someone who believes in making the most of every creation, and prefers to avoid all that work, I like to craft pieces that can shine all year long. Why limit joy to just a season?

I’m excited to share two projects that embody this philosophy perfectly. These pieces transform the concept of “holiday decor” into something more! These pieces of versatile artwork adapt to your home’s evolving style throughout the year. So you don’t have to pack them away!

The inspiration for one of these projects came from an unexpected source: my son. He showed up one day with a stack of discarded cabinet doors from work. While others saw trash destined for the landfill, I saw hidden potential waiting to be uncovered. With a little imagination and some creative flair, those cabinet doors were reimagined into something truly special.

By combining the rustic charm of cabinet doors with classic sheet music, soft ribbons, and floral accents, I created a piece that feels timeless yet modern. At the center of it all are bold wooden “Joy” letters, standing proud and purposeful. There’s something undeniably powerful about displaying the word ‘joy’ in your home—it’s more than just a seasonal sentiment. It’s a gentle, daily reminder to embrace happiness, gratitude, and the beauty in life’s simplest moments. And that’s something worth celebrating all year long.

Don’t have extra cabinet doors laying around? Here’s a beautiful alternative: Transform a breadboard from Hobby Lobby into a stunning display piece. Layer it with sheet music prints for vintage charm, add flower stems for natural beauty, and top it off with a miniature Joy ornament (a scaled-down version of my popular design) for that holiday touch.

Here’s what makes these pieces special: versatility. Every element is intentionally designed to be interchangeable. Those Christmas ornaments? Swap them out for spring blooms. Winter greens? Replace them with summer wildflowers. The possibilities are endless, but the core beauty remains constant.
