Creative Inspiration When You’re Feeling Stuck

We’ve all been there—sitting in front of a blank canvas, an empty page, or an uninspiring workspace, waiting for that spark of creative inspiration. Feeling stuck can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you have deadlines or personal goals to meet! The good news? We’ve come up with some AMAZING ideas to boost your creative inspiration when you’re stuck.

Using Your 5 Senses as Creative Inspiration

When you’re feeling stuck creatively, one of the best things that you can do is engage all of your senses. Usually, creative blocks happen when we’re feeling overwhelmed, burnt out, pressured, bored, or uninspired… But we can fix that! Here are some of the ways that engaging your senses can help you find creative inspiration and get un-stuck.

Ignite Creativity With Inspiring Sights

There’s a reason that Pinterest is such a popular tool among artists! Our ability to be inspired by the mere sight of something interesting is like a superpower. Sometimes, all it takes is a quick scroll or a change of scenery to get the ideas flowing.

  • Create a Vision Board: Collect photos, art, quotes, colors, textures, and anything else that inspires you and arrange them on a board. You can make a physical collage or a quick pinterest board! This goal for this board is to make something that you can reference again and again, any time you might feel stuck.
  • Visit an Art Gallery or Museum: Immersing yourself in the works of other artists can provide fresh perspectives and ideas! Pay attention to the colors, shapes, and techniques that resonate with you. You might find yourself inspired to copy one of the old masters or try something totally new.
  • Nature Walks: This is our FAVORITE way to inspire creativity! The natural world is full of patterns, textures, and colors that can inspire new ideas, so get outside and find something that excites you.

Try Some Mood Music for Creative Inspiration

Have you ever fallen into a funk where you really want to make something but you just can’t seem to drag yourself over to the canvas? Next time, try a playlist! Sound has a profound impact on our mood and creativity… Just think about the last time you teared up over a beautiful ballad or found yourself grinning from ear to ear while dancing to your favorite music. If you just can’t seem to get yourself in the mood to make some art, try pressing play.

  • Listen to Music: Choose music that suits the mood of your project. Classical music, for example, is known for enhancing concentration and creativity, while upbeat tracks can boost your energy levels.
  • Ambient Soundscapes: Sounds of rain, ocean waves, or a bustling café can create an environment that enhances your creative flow. Websites and apps like Noisli and Calm offer a variety of soundscapes to choose from.
  • White Noise: Not so much down as you are distracted? Sometimes, a constant, unobtrusive sound can help block out distractions and keep you focused! Try different options, from sound machines to rain sound playlists to a fan in the room, to see what works for you.

Get Hands-On When You’re Burnt Out

Are you so stressed that a blank canvas gives you nothing but heart palpitations? Take some of the pressure off with a little tactile art! The practice of using your hands and body to make something will help relieve your stress, take the pressure off, and provide inspiration for future art.

  • Seriously, Get Hands-On: Relieve the pressure of creating something perfect by not creating anything at all. Pull out some finger paints, Play-Doh, modeling clay, Silly Putty, or beads. Sculpt something, make a mosaic on the table, or just play with the materials and focus on how they feel in your hands and the shapes you enjoy making.
  • Go Big: If you do decide to create, try engaging your entire body. Stand, use broad, sweeping strokes, and keep your hips loose. Relax your wrists and fingers. Dance with the canvas!
  • Get Moving: Physical activity can stimulate creative inspiration! Move your body in whatever way feels best: yoga, dance, or even a simple stretch can help reset your mind and body.

De-Stress Your Space With Scent

Scent is a powerful sense that can really impact how we’re feeling! While bad smells might send us running from the room, we can harness the power of good scents for some creative inspiration!

  • Aromatherapy: Some essential oils like lavender, peppermint, and citrus can help boost your mood and creativity. Pick a scent that you find energizing and fill your space with it!
  • Scented Candles: Our sense of smell is closely linked to memory and emotion, which is why just a whiff of an old perfume or the sweet scent of sticky buns might conjure a memory of a loved one. Choose candles with scents that bring up fond memories and create something beautiful inspired by those experiences.
  • Fresh Air: There’s just nothing better than fresh air to give us a little boost! If possible, try painting outside! At the very least, head outdoors for a few minutes and take some deep breaths before you begin your next creative project.

Feeling Wiped Out? Try Culinary Creativity

While taste might not be the first sense you think of when it comes to art, your taste buds can still play a unique role in creative inspiration.

  • Art Starts On The Inside: Cooking can be a creative act in itself! Trying out new recipes and experimenting with ingredients can be fun, inspiring, and good for you.
  • Play With Your Food: Choose your next meal based on the colors of each ingredient and try to arrange a plate that is as beautiful as it is delicious.
  • Food As Art: Consider how to incorporate food into your art… You could paint a still-life portrait of an apple or you could cut that apple in half and use it to stamp a dish towel for some fun new decor.
