The days are getting shorter which means summer is coming to a close. I am a warm-weather girl to my core so I greet these last days of summer with a bit of sadness. I do enjoy the change of seasons though as it allows me to reset, clean house, and plan for upcoming projects. Speaking of upcoming projects… I am working on DIY Halloween decor now. I have a small retail space in a vendor mall and by September 1st, customers are looking for fall and Halloween decor. I am a spooky Halloween person and I gravitate to the macabre so when I found a paperback copy of Grey’s Anatomy in the thrift store for four bucks I knew exactly what I could make with it.
Supplies for Easy DIY Halloween Decor
- Anatomy book or book with fall/Halloween images
- Assortment of frames (mine are all thrifted)
- Pencil
- Paper cutter or scissors
- Glass cleaner and paper towels
DIY Halloween Decor Steps
- Thumb through your book and tear out pages with images you want to frame
- Disassemble the frame and remove the glass
- Clean glass well
- Paint frame if desired and let dry (I thrifted all black frames so I could skip this step)
- Place the glass from your frame over the images until you find one that fits
- Mark the corners of the glass on your book page with a pencil
- Use a paper cutter or scissors to cut out the image using the corner markings as a guide
- Re-assemble your frame inserting the image you just cut out
Frames and books are widely available for cheap in thrift stores and other second-hand markets making it easy to create DIY gallery walls and holiday art. I have done this for years using all types of images. Vintage children’s books often have beautiful illustrations which make them fantastic (and cheap!) DIY nursery decor.
