How to Make Folded Book Ornaments: A Step-by-Step Guide

By Danielle Kaminski

Looking for a way to bring a bookish, upcycled vibe to your decor? Try making folded book ornaments! Thrift Stores all across the country are overflowing with obscure paperback titles that eventually get tossed into the trash when no one is looking. Most charity shops sell them for only $0.50 or $1 each! Not only do these folded book ornaments add charm to your space, but they also make unique, eco-friendly decorations. Follow this step-by-step guide to get started!

These Folded Book Ornaments can be created with full-size paperbacks for larger decor, or you can cut your books down to create smaller ornaments! I purchased this industrial cutter over the summer and it works like a dream!

Materials Needed for Folded Book Ornaments

  • Paperback books (any size; thrifted books are perfect!)
  • Industrial paper cutter or a sharp utility knife (optional)
  • Twine, silk, velvet, or ribbon for hangers and embellishments
  • Wooden beads, buttons, or tassels for decorative details
  • Hot glue gun

Step 1: Prepare Your Book

  1. Choose Your Book Size: You can use a full-size paperback for larger ornaments or cut your book down for smaller decorations. If you prefer smaller folded book ornaments, use an industrial cutter to slice the book in half lengthwise. Set aside any paper scraps for future crafts like decoupage or garlands!
  2. Section the Book: Cut the bound half of the book into two or three sections, depending on the desired ornament size.

Step 2: Remove the Covers and Prepare to Fold

  1. Remove Covers: Carefully tear off the front and back covers. I usually take off the pages right next to the cover as well.
  2. Pro Tip – Loosen the Spine: If your paperback wasn’t as loved as most and the spine is still stiff, open the book all the way and break the spine in 6-8 places so that the spine more easily rolls onto itself as you fold.

Step 3: Choose Your Folding Style

Here are three popular folding techniques to try:

1. Drum Fold

For a simple drum-shaped ornament:

  • Fold each page in half, tucking the ends to the spine.

2. Diamond Fold

To create a diamond shape:

  • Fold the top corner of each page to the spine, then the bottom corner to the spine. There may be some overlap on the second fold, creating a diamond effect.

3. Gem Shape Fold

For a gem-like ornament:

  • Start with the Drum Fold by folding each page in half toward the spine.
  • Then, fold down each corner to meet the spine.

Pro Tip: The Diamond and Gem folds create thicker shapes, so you may not need to use the entire book. Monitor how the spine is rolling, and if necessary, cut off a portion using an exacto knife or box cutter.

Step 4: Add the Hanger and Embellishments

I like to use the raw edge silks and velvets to create tassels and hangers for my ornaments , but you can also use simple twine and a wooden bead or large button to hold the base. Watch the reel of my whole process here!

  1. Attach a Hanger: Use twine, silk, or velvet to create a loop for hanging. Tie a knot at the top of the spine, and measure the length down the spine to attach embellishments.
  2. Decorate the Base: Add decorative elements like a wooden bead, button, or tassel at the base of your folded book ornament. This will serve as a finishing touch.
  3. Secure with Glue: Thread the hanging cord through the rounded spine, then apply a line of hot glue along the center to hold everything securely.
