Deborah Watson Andress is the founder of The Tattered Artist and a mixed media artist, storyteller, and creative voice from South Alabama whose work is rooted in faith, family, and finding beauty in life’s tattered places. Inspired by the rich traditions of the South—from quiet country roads to Alabama’s Gulf Coast—she creates layered mixed media art that weaves together worn papers, meaningful stories, and the everyday moments that shape our lives.

Deborah’s creative journey has been anything but a straight line. Now in her 70s, she has come to see that her love of painting was only the beginning of a much larger story. Today, she uses both her art and her own experiences to encourage women to believe their story isn’t over yet.

Believing that God never wastes a single chapter of our story, Deborah creates art that invites others to see beauty where they once saw brokenness. The seasons that once felt like waiting have become part of what taught her that creativity—and purpose—don’t come with an expiration date. Her whimsical style, love of storytelling, and passion for encouraging women are woven throughout every painting, collection, and creative endeavor.

When she’s not in her studio, Deborah is creating memories or planning gatherings with her family—like hosting her annual Nana’s Camp, now a 14-year tradition—tending her wildflower garden, traveling to new places with her husband, or spoiling her little Yorkie, Lulu, who is rarely more than a few steps away. At the heart of it all is her belief that the way we live, gather, celebrate, and love one another becomes part of the legacy we leave behind. Maybe that’s why one of her greatest joys is encouraging women to embrace the chapter they’re living and recognize God’s fingerprints in every season of their lives.
