Before You Look for a Muralist – Be Prepared

  • What wall do you want your mural painted on?
  • Will your mural be on an interior or exterior wall?
  • Take measurements and photos of your wall.
  • What is the surface texture of your wall?
  • Do you have a budget in mind?
  • What is your timeline?
  • Are there specific times of day you would need your muralist to work? During business hours or off business hours?

Mural clients generally have a specific wall or location in mind for their mural. Get the general measurements of the wall and evaluate the surface texture. Take photos of the wall that you can share with potential muralist candidates.

There are lots of ways to find mural candidates. I’ve had clients reach out to me from all the contact options listed above. You can also contact local arts organizations for a list of local muralists. Visit local murals that you like in your area and get the artist’s social media handle or contact information from the mural. Send them a DM! Questions to ask Mural Candidates

  • Do they have a website or social media accounts with recent mural work?
  • Do they specialize in interior or exterior murals?
  • Do they use spray paint or paint brush?

Once you find several muralists that seem like a good fit, schedule a phone call to begin the interview process. Ask them the above questions. Ask them about their current timeline for new projects and how they price mural projects. Ask them to describe their design process.

Share your inspiration ideas for your mural and ask if they design in this style. Create a Pinterest board with your ideas or murals you like and share them with your muralist. Feel free to check out my mural boards here.

Once you and your muralist have agreed to work together, you should expect a Statement of Work and Contract for the job. With these details in place, you and your muralist are ready to get to work designing and painting your mural!
